Most TikTok Shop sellers lose 15–30% of their revenue to fees they never accounted for. They set a price, subtract their product cost, and call the difference "profit." Then they wonder why their bank account doesn't match their spreadsheet.
The reality: TikTok Shop has seven distinct fee layers that eat into every sale. Miss one, and your "profitable" product might actually lose money.
This guide walks you through the exact formula, every fee you must count, and a free calculator that does the math for you.
The Profit Formula: Revenue − All Costs = Real Profit
The formula is simple. Getting every variable right is the hard part.
Real Profit = Selling Price
− Platform Fees (commission, transaction, fixed, affiliate)
− Cost of Goods (COGS)
− Outbound Shipping Cost
− Ad Spend per Unit (CPA)
= Net Profit Per Unit
Every line above is a real cost. Skip any of them, and your margin is fiction.
Two things that surprise people, and that we model the way TikTok actually bills:
- Money a buyer pays for shipping is not your revenue. You collect it and pass it to the carrier. Our calculator counts it as a cost on the commission base (in some markets) but never as income.
- A platform-funded discount is not your revenue either. It reduces what the buyer pays, and TikTok funds the difference.
Every Fee You Must Account For (7 Categories)
| Fee Type | Who Pays | When It Applies | Actual Range (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category Commission | Seller | Every sale | 4.36% – 17.82% depending on market & category |
| Transaction Fee | Seller | MY, SG, PH only | 2.24% – 3.78%. None in US or UK |
| Fixed / Per-Order Fees | Seller | MY and PH only | RM 0.54/order (MY). None in US, UK, SG |
| Affiliate/Creator Commission | Seller | When enabled | Rate you set in Seller Center (we allow 0–80%) |
| Refund Administration Fee | Seller | US only | 20% of referral fee, capped $5/SKU |
| Seller Discount | Seller | When you run a sale | Your choice (reduces the commission base) |
| Platform Discount | TikTok | Promotional vouchers | TikTok-funded (not your revenue) |
Key insight: the commission base is not the same in every market, and this is where manual estimates go wrong:
- US, UK — base = (selling price − your discount) + customer shipping + platform discount
- SG — base = (selling price − your discount) + customer shipping
- MY, PH — base = selling price − your discount. Customer shipping is excluded.
So a US or UK seller who charges a buyer $5 for shipping is charged commission on $5 more than a Malaysian or Philippine seller would be for the identical charge.
How Category Commission Rates Work
Commission isn't one number. It varies by:
- Market — US, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines each have different rate cards
- Category — in the US, 185 of 202 categories sit at 6% and 17 sit at 5% (Jewelry and Pre-Owned). In the UK, 217 categories pay 9% and 129 pay 5% (Phones & Electronics, Computers & Office, most Beauty, Pre-Owned)
- Seller Tier — Malaysia and Singapore have BXP / non-BXP and programme tiers with different rates; the Philippines has Marketplace vs Mall
- Sales thresholds — 16 US categories (Collectibles and Pre-Owned) charge the normal rate on your first $10,000 in sales, then only 3% on the portion above it

Hidden Costs Most Sellers Miss
1. Customer Shipping Changes Your Commission Base
In US, UK, SG: customer shipping is included in the commission base.
In MY, PH: customer shipping is excluded.
A $5 shipping charge in the UK therefore adds commission on that $5. The same charge in the Philippines does not.
2. Affiliate Commission Compounds
Affiliate commission is charged on selling price minus your discount — in every market. On top of that, TikTok's own commission still applies, and in US/UK/SG that commission base also includes customer shipping.
If you enable Open Collaboration at 15% on a $50 product:
- Affiliate fee = 15% × ($50 − your discount)
- TikTok commission = its rate × (($50 − your discount) + customer shipping [+ platform discount in US/UK])
You pay both. They stack. The 15% above is an example rate you choose in Seller Center, not a published TikTok rate — our calculator lets you enter 0–80%.
3. Refund Administration Fee (US Only)
US sellers pay a refund admin fee: 20% of the referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU (effective 15 May 2025).
At a 5% return rate on a $52.50 commission base: that's about $0.03 per unit sold — charged whether or not you keep the sale.
4. New Seller Promotions Are Not Published Rates
Be careful here, because this is widely misquoted:
- US — our rate data carries a promotional rate of 1.8%, but TikTok does not publish it, so we label it needs verification internally. Model it, but do not plan around it.
- UK — a new seller promotion exists within 45 days of onboarding, conditional on completing the required Seller Missions. The exact rate is not published. Our data holds a 0% row at medium confidence, and our calculator deliberately does not charge 0% — pricing a fee at zero would overstate your profit, so it shows the standard rate and flags the promotion as unpriced.
- MY, SG, PH — no new seller promotion appears in our current rate data.
When a promo ends, your margin drops. Model the standard rate as your real cost and treat the promo as upside.

Example Calculation: $50 Product (US Market, 6% Category)
| Component | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Selling Price | $50.00 | Listed price |
| Seller Discount | −$5.00 | 10% off sale |
| Platform Discount | −$3.00 | TikTok-funded voucher |
| Customer Shipping charged to buyer | $4.50 | Pass-through, not your revenue |
| Commission Base | $52.50 | ($50 − $5) + $4.50 + $3.00 |
| Referral Fee (6%) | −$3.15 | Charged on the $52.50 base |
| Transaction Fee | $0.00 | The US has no separate transaction fee |
| Fixed / Platform Support Fee | $0.00 | The US has no per-order platform fee |
| Affiliate (None) | $0.00 | |
| Refund Admin Fee (5% return rate) | −$0.03 | 5% × (20% × $3.15) |
| Total Platform Fees | −$3.18 | |
| COGS | −$18.00 | Landed cost |
| Outbound Shipping | −$4.50 | Your cost to ship |
| Ad Spend (CPA) | −$3.00 | Blended cost per sale |
| Net Profit | $21.32 | |
| Profit Margin | 42.6% | Profit ÷ Selling Price |
Two things this table shows that a mental estimate never would:
- Your effective take rate (6.36%) is higher than the headline 6%, because customer shipping and the platform discount both sit inside the commission base.
- A naive estimate overstates profit by $6.18. Subtracting only COGS and shipping gives $27.50. Real profit is $21.32 — a 22% overestimation.
Common Mistakes That Kill Margins
| Mistake | Impact | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using headline commission only | Misses tiered rates, thresholds, exceptions | Check your exact category on market fee page |
| Ignoring transaction fees | Up to 3.78% extra in MY, SG, PH | Always include in calculator |
| Assuming a fixed fee exists everywhere | Only MY (RM 0.54) and PH (PHP 5) have one | Check per market — US and UK have none |
| Forgetting affiliate fees | Doubles your fee load when creators are on | Model affiliate before launching campaigns |
| Treating a promo rate as permanent | Margin jumps the day it ends | Calculate the standard rate as your baseline |
| Getting the shipping base backwards | Wrong commission in every market | US/UK/SG include it, MY/PH do not |
| Using markup instead of margin | $50 cost + 50% markup = $75 price → 33% margin | Target margin, back-calculate price |
