Most TikTok Shop advice starts with the part that matters least: how to open the account. Accounts are not the hard part. What decides whether a new seller makes money is the next four decisions — category, fee, fulfilment, and what you pay for the sale.
Every number here comes from running our actual calculation engines. Where we lack verified data, we say so instead of filling the gap. We are an independent tool, not affiliated with TikTok, and our rate files cover five markets only — US, UK, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. All fees were last verified 2026-09-26. Your Seller Center is always the authority.
1. Is TikTok Shop Right for You? (Pros/Cons)
TikTok Shop is excellent for some products and a poor fit for others. Its two structural advantages — a feed instead of a search box, and creators who sell for you — are worth nothing unless your product participates in them.
The case for
Discovery does not require an existing audience. On a search marketplace you wait for demand and bid for it. Here a video reaches buyers who never searched for your product.
Commission is low in the US and UK. Our verified rate files put US referral fees at 5%–6% and UK platform commission at 5%–9%, VAT inclusive. Amazon's published 2026 referral fee is 15% in most categories.
Creators can sell for you, and our rate files contain no monthly subscription fee for any of the five markets.
The case against
You must produce content, or pay for it. The feed rewards video, so a product with nothing to show will not sell.
You handle fulfilment unless you use FBT. There is no free logistics in the base model — you pack and ship, or pay per-unit.
Fee bases are not always your price. In the US and UK, commission is charged on customer shipping and platform-funded discounts too, so your effective take rate exceeds the headline rate. Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines add a transaction fee on top.
Margin is thinner than it looks once creators and ads are involved. A 15% affiliate rate on a $30 US listing takes margin from 38.93% to 23.93% — a 15-point cut, before ads.
The honest test
Ask one question: can I make three short videos of this product this week? If yes, TikTok Shop is worth a serious test. If the product is purely functional and undemonstrable — a replacement part, a consumable — you are fighting the platform's core advantage, and should treat your presence here purely as a fee comparison.
2. Account Setup: Requirements & Verification
We are deliberately light on specifics here. Seller eligibility rules differ per market, seller type and category, and TikTok revises them. Our rate files record commission rates and fee structures — not onboarding requirements — so we will not invent document lists, age or turnover thresholds.
What we can verify
- The UK runs a new-seller promotion tied to onboarding, reducing commission after completing required Seller Missions within 45 days of onboarding. The exact rate is not published on Seller University.
- The US has an unverified new-seller promotional rate in our data at 1.8%. TikTok does not publish it, so we label it needs verification everywhere it appears.
The second point matters most, because promotional rates are not published rates. Our calculator refuses a flattering number:
- Switch on the UK new-seller promo and the engine marks the commission fee unpriced, marks the calculation incomplete, and shows the standard 5.00% published rate. Pricing it at zero would overstate your margin.
- Switch on the US promo and it applies 1.8% — but every such line is flagged needs verification.
Build your plan on the standard published rate. Promotions expire, are conditional on tasks you may not complete, and their terms live in your account rather than on any public page. Model them as upside, never a baseline.
Your verification checklist
Confirm directly with TikTok before investing inventory:
- Seller type and eligibility for your market — individual or business entity.
- Required documents — identity, business registration, bank and tax details, category permits.
- Your exact category placement — this sets your commission rate, the decision with the largest financial impact.
- Your seller tier, if your market uses one. Malaysia and Singapore tier by programme, and the difference is large.
- Any promotion offered, with its real rate and end date.
Verified fee data by market, with source links and confidence levels:
- US · UK · Malaysia · Singapore · Philippines
3. Product Listing Optimization (SEO + Creative)
TikTok Shop has two search surfaces, and most new sellers only optimise one of them.
The search side
Your title, description and attributes feed TikTok Shop's in-app search, which behaves like a marketplace search box:
- Put the product's actual name in the title. Category terms first, brand or model where relevant.
- Fill in every attribute the category offers. Sponsored and indexed listings get more impressions.
- Use the category the platform expects. Your category sets your fee rate (section 4), and a mis-picked one both overcharges you and suppresses your listing.
- Price against the category, not your cost. A $30 item in a 5% category and one in a 9% category are different products commercially.
We have no verified TikTok keyword-volume figure, so we will not invent one. Judge terms by what the in-app search returns.
The feed side — where most sales come from
This is the part that decides whether TikTok Shop works for you.
- Lead with the problem, then the product. The first two seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest. Consider the hook dead if it needs audio — most viewers start muted.
- Show the result, not the object. Before/after, texture, transformation, the thing that makes someone say "I want that".
- One product, one video, one hook. Do not catalogue your range in a single clip.
- Post volume beats polish. A mediocre extra video costs far less than a week of perfect production.
A listing that ranks in search but has no video gets impressions and no orders. A great video on a badly categorised listing is punished twice — poor reach and a wrong fee.
4. Understanding the Fee Structure
This is where beginners lose money: they read the headline rate and stop.
Baseline: $30 price, $12 COGS, $4.50 shipping, 5% returns, no ads, no affiliate.
| Market / tier | Fee lines | Total fees | Take rate | Net margin | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK Electronics (5%) | Commission 5.00% | $1.50 | 5.00% | 40.00% | $17.37 |
| US Jewelry (5%) | Referral 5% + refund | $1.52 | 5.07% | 39.93% | $17.38 |
| US Skincare (6%) | Referral 6% + refund | $1.82 | 6.07% | 38.93% | $17.56 |
| PH Fashion Accessories (Marketplace) | Commission 7.00% + transaction 2.24% | $2.77 | 9.23% | 35.77% | $18.18 |
| PH Fashion Accessories (Mall) | Commission 7.89% + transaction 2.24% | $3.10 | 10.33% | 34.67% | $18.40 |
| SG default (Standard) | Commission 8.175% + transaction 3.27% | $3.43 | 11.43% | 33.57% | $18.63 |
| MY Electronics (Non-BXP Marketplace) | Commission 11.34% + transaction 3.78% + RM 0.54 | $5.07 | 16.90% | 28.10% | $20.08 |
Read the take-rate column, not the headline. The same $30 product costs $1.50 in the UK and $5.07 in Malaysia — a 3.4x difference.
Four fee lines drive it:
- Commission / referral fee — the category rate. UK commission is on (Net Sales + Customer Shipping + Platform Discount), VAT inclusive. US referral is on (Customer Payment + Platform Discount − Tax), and the US has no separate transaction fee — it sits inside the referral fee.
- Transaction fee — an extra percentage on customer payment including shipping, in three markets: Singapore 3.27%, Malaysia 3.78%, Philippines 2.24%. In Singapore it is additional to commission, so an 8.175% default category becomes an 11.43% take.
- Flat per-order fee — only Malaysia, at RM 0.54 per order (effective 2026-02-15, SST inclusive), excluded from contribution margin since that is defined on variable fees only.
- Refund administration fee (US) — 20% of the refunded referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU (effective 2025-05-15), modelled against your return rate:
| Return rate | Total fees | Net profit | Net margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | $1.80 | $11.70 | 39.00% |
| 5% | $1.82 | $11.68 | 38.93% |
| 10% | $1.84 | $11.66 | 38.87% |
| 20% | $1.87 | $11.63 | 38.77% |
- Optional programmes — SG charges a 1.09% pre-order fee (from 2025-12-22); MY a 2% pre-order fee (from 2025-11-24). PH's optional Shipping Service Fee is 5.25% + PHP 5 per order, and we flag its mandatory-versus-optional status as needs verification. Affiliate commission is separate — money you pay a creator on top of platform fees, modelled on (Selling Price − Seller Discount).
Seller tier is a first-order decision
Malaysia and Singapore tier by programme, and choosing wrong costs real money. Same $30 product, four tiers:
| Market / tier | Total fees | Take rate | Net margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| MY Electronics — BXP Marketplace | $3.78 | 12.60% | 32.40% |
| MY Electronics — BXP Mall | $4.75 | 15.83% | 29.17% |
| MY Electronics — Non-BXP Marketplace | $5.07 | 16.90% | 28.10% |
| MY Electronics — Non-BXP Mall | $6.05 | 20.17% | 24.83% |
| SG Electronics — BXP | $2.62 | 8.73% | 36.27% |
Non-BXP Mall to BXP Marketplace is a 7.57-point take-rate swing on an identical product. Tier is not a later optimisation.
Singapore has a trap worth naming: BXP-restricted products — virtual goods, infant formula, gold decorations, semi-finished gold — are charged the standard BXP rate of 7.085% with no BXP service fee, however good the BXP terms look elsewhere. Mixed BXP orders instead combine a lower commission rate and a 3.27% BXP service fee on non-restricted items, so two SKUs in one order can differ.
How discounts interact with fees
Modelled on a US Skincare listing with a $60 list price and $12 unit cost:
| Seller discount | Platform fees | Take rate on list price |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | $3.60 | 6.00% |
| 20% | $2.40 | 4.00% |
| 30% | $1.80 | 3.00% |
Commission is charged on the discounted price, so a 30% discount cuts fees from $3.60 to $1.80. But the take-rate column is measured against the $60 list price, not what the customer paid: charge the same 6% against the $42 collected and the rate is unchanged.
Discounting does not make your fee rate worse, it makes your profit smaller. You save percentage points on fees and lose far more absolute dollars. On a $12 unit cost with no shipping: $44.40 kept at no discount, $33.60 at 20%, $28.20 at 30%.
More per market: fee calculator post.
5. Fulfilment Options: FBT, Self-Ship, 3PL
Three real options. Pick deliberately — a structural decision, not a cost tweak.
Option 1: Self-fulfil
You hold stock, pack and ship. You pay nothing to the platform beyond postage, and for light items postage often beats any per-unit fee — self-fulfilling our $30 product at $4.50 postage keeps $11.68 (38.93%).
You also carry the risk of slow dispatch, carrier failures and packing labour. New sellers should start here: the cheapest way to learn what happens.
Option 2: FBT — Fulfilled by TikTok
TikTok warehouses and ships. You pay a per-unit fee instead of postage and hand over dispatch. Verified FBT rules from TikTok Seller Center (US, rate card effective 2026-07-13):
- Free customer shipping by default on all FBT orders — no $30 minimum. Sellers can opt out (effective 2025-06-16).
- Chargeable weight is the greater of actual and dimensional weight, where dimensional = L × W × H ÷ 166. If actual weight is 2 lb or under and volume is 332 in³ or under, you are charged on actual weight (effective 2026-05-01).
- Weight tiers run 4 oz to 150 lbs. Heavy Bulky tiers for 50–150 lbs were added 2026-07-13.
- Multi-unit discounts on 2, 3 and 4+ unit orders. The 0–4 lb tier was cut by up to 24% from 2026-01-12.
- SIOC discounts of $0.06–$0.70 across 4 oz–50 lb tiers, single-unit orders only, requiring SIOC certification (effective 2026-05-15).
- Storage discounts of 14%–43% for inventory stored up to 270 days (effective 2025-12-15).
- Returns changed on 2026-06-01: the flat $3.00 Customer Returns Handling Fee was replaced by itemised per-unit fees based on service type and final disposition.
We are not quoting FBT per-unit dollar fees, on purpose. Our verified FBT data covers these rules but its rate-card tables are only partially extracted, so we will not publish an unverified per-unit number.
SIOC (Seller-Provided Independent Compliance Certification) is a certification you obtain so TikTok can ship in packaging you supply. The discount is meaningful but gated on certification you lack on day one — a month-two project, not a launch assumption.
Option 3: 3PL
A third-party logistics partner holds and ships your stock — the standard answer once you outgrow self-fulfilling but do not want FBT's per-unit pricing, especially for multi-channel stock where Amazon fulfilment uses the same inventory. Choose for integration quality (returns to one address, SKU accuracy, API uptime), not just per-unit price: the failure mode is a stock discrepancy discovered after you promised inventory you do not have.
The decision rule
- Cheap, light, fast-moving → self-fulfil. Postage under roughly $3–4 per order usually wins.
- Heavy, bulky, slow-moving → FBT, once you have read the rate card.
- Multi-channel or past roughly 500 units a month → 3PL.
Run all three in our Profit Calculator — same inputs, three answers.
6. TikTok Shop Ads: Getting First Sales
We will not invent CPC, CPM or benchmark figures for TikTok Shop Ads — auction prices vary by season and category, and a made-up benchmark is worse than no number. What we can give you is the number that decides it: how much you can afford to pay for a sale.
Same $30 US Skincare listing, varying only cost per acquisition:
| CPA | Net profit | Net margin | Break-even price | Max CPA at 4x ROAS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $0.00 | $11.68 | 38.93% | $17.56 | $7.50 |
| $2.00 | $9.68 | 32.27% | $19.69 | $7.50 |
| $3.00 | $8.68 | 28.93% | $20.76 | $7.50 |
| $4.50 | $7.18 | 23.93% | $22.35 | $7.50 |
| $6.00 | $5.68 | 18.93% | $23.95 | $7.50 |
| $8.00 | $3.68 | 12.27% | $26.09 | $7.50 |
Your maximum CPA at a 4x ROAS target is $7.50 on this product — spend above it and you miss your ROAS target regardless of what the auction charges.
The most important line in this guide
At $4.50 of ad spend this product still makes $7.18, a 23.93% margin. At $8.00 it makes $3.68, a 12.27% margin. You have about $3.50 of headroom between a profitable ad strategy and a money-losing one, and it arrived without your product changing at all.
A beginner who sees "$3 profit per order" as acceptable has misread the table. Your profit per order is the budget for everything you must pay to acquire the customer — ads, creator commission, samples, all of it.
Getting the first sales
- Get organic proof before you pay. Post 10–15 videos. If nothing sells without ads, ads will not rescue it — you just pay to learn the same thing.
- Promote the video, not just the product. TikTok Shop's ad products push content, so a good video with a mediocre product beats the reverse.
- Start with one hero SKU. Five SKUs at a $5 CPA is five tests; one is one.
- Set your CPA ceiling from the table above, then bid to it. Not the reverse.
- Re-check break-even as you discount. Advertising into a discount is how margin disappears quietly.
7. Compliance, Policies & Avoiding Bans
Same principle as section 2: our rate files are fee data, not a policy library, and we will not invent prohibited-product lists, penalty schedules or enforcement thresholds. TikTok's policies are enforced regionally and change often, so what follows is practical risk guidance, not a rule set. Check the current Seller Center Policies before you list.
The categories that get accounts restricted
Regulated categories carry document and approval requirements beyond ordinary goods — commonly health and supplements, cosmetics and claims, food and beverage, alcohol, nicotine and vaping, medical devices, baby safety products, and anything needing electrical certification. If your product makes a health claim, treat it as regulated until told otherwise.
Claims are the fastest way to get an account limited
The most common avoidable enforcement problem is a listing whose claims cannot be substantiated:
- Health and efficacy claims — "treats", "cures", "clinically proven", anything implying a medical effect.
- Before/after imagery implying guaranteed results, and superlatives like "best" or "guaranteed".
- Counterfeit or unlicensed branding — real legal exposure, not just platform.
- Off-platform contact and payment in listing text or images, which breaches the terms and removes your protection.
Practical habits that prevent most problems
- Claim only what you can evidence, and keep the evidence.
- Never misrepresent the product — material differences between listing and item are a violation on every marketplace.
- Use real product images and real video. No stock photos of a different product.
- Keep tax and business details current. Stale documents are a common suspension cause.
- Ship within the promised window. Late dispatch is a leading quality metric and within your control.
- Watch return and dispute rates. A spike signals a product or description problem.
- Check Seller Center weekly. It is your only notification channel.
A suspension costs far more than these checks take.
8. Scaling: Affiliate, Live Shopping, Shop Ads
Once one SKU sells reliably without ad spend, you have three channels to grow it. All three subtract from the same margin, which is what keeps scaling from becoming loss-making growth.
Affiliate and creator collaboration
Three models our rate data covers:
| Model | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Open collaboration | Any creator can apply. You set one commission rate for everyone who joins. | Simplest to set up; your rate is public. |
| Targeted collaboration | You invite specific creators and agree a rate with each. | Better content, better conversion; rate differs per creator. |
| Shop Ads | Commission tied to ad spend rather than a creator agreement. | An order can cost you ad spend plus commission. |
We quote no affiliate rate ranges, because we have none verified. Our rate files populate no affiliate figures for any of the five markets, and the range fields in our schema are validation bounds, not published rates. Commission is set per agreement and visible only in your Seller Center tools.
What the effect looks like, on our $30 US Skincare listing:
| Affiliate rate | Total fees | Net profit | Net margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | $1.82 | $11.68 | 38.93% |
| 5% | $3.32 | $10.18 | 33.93% |
| 10% | $4.82 | $8.68 | 28.93% |
| 15% | $6.32 | $7.18 | 23.93% |
| 20% | $7.82 | $5.68 | 18.93% |
A 15% creator commission takes your margin from 38.93% to 23.93% — a 15-percentage-point cut, more than every platform fee on this product combined. At 20% you keep 18.93%. Set commission from your margin, not from what a competitor appears to pay.
Live Shopping
Live sessions can convert better than a static listing, but you trade margin for creators, coupons, giveaways and discounts. Run a live session on a SKU you have already proved organically. Discounts work best on proven demand; on an unproven product they teach customers to wait for the sale.
Shop Ads and Shop-level campaigns
Shop-level campaigns promote a whole storefront rather than one listing, suiting a catalogue with several proven winners. The trap is spending against your own organic success: paying for customers who would have bought anyway. Track whether a campaign adds incremental sales.
What scaling actually requires
- Model every channel before enabling it. Affiliate at 15% and CPA at $4.50 together leave a fraction of the margin in section 4.
- Move fulfilment before you scale volume. Self-fulfilling 500 units a week by hand damages your account. Switch to FBT or a 3PL first.
- Add SKUs only after the first is genuinely profitable.
- Watch cash, not revenue. Revenue can grow while profit shrinks per order. Check the monthly projection at 500 units, not 50.
- Re-verify fees as you enter new markets. Rate files were last verified 2026-09-26.
9. Run Your Own Numbers Before You Commit Stock
You now have the framework: fit, setup, listing, fees, fulfilment, ads, compliance, scaling. What decides everything is running your product through the fee arithmetic.
The TikTok Shop Profit Calculator prices your exact market, category and seller tier against verified 2026 rate data:
- Every fee line — with source URL, effective date and confidence level
- Net margin, contribution margin and effective take rate — three questions, one real
- Break-even price, and the price needed for any target profit
- Max CPA at any ROAS target, and monthly projection at real volume
Run your product at your price, COGS and shipping. Then run it with 15% affiliate commission, and again with $4.50 CPA. If those runs go negative, the answer is not more content — it is a different product, category or price.
